The Semex Alliance was proud to once again manage the Sale of Stars at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. In it's 56th year, this internationally famous sale series was held Thursday, November 13 at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Exhibition Place, Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the Ring of Excellence.

The Ring of Excellence was overflowing with dairy cattle enthuisiasts as more than 2,000 spectators watched as Semex presented the very finest Holstein, Jersey, Ayrshire and Brown Swiss individuals available.

Holstein Edition of Sale of Stars

Held immediately following the Component Breed Edition of the Sale of Stars, the Holstein Sale did not disappoint the thousands of spectators anxiously awaiting as the reigning World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Thrulane James Rose EX-97, took to the sale runway. As the crowd hushed and camera lights flashed, Rose's choice of daughters by Talent and Dundee sold for an impressive $36,000 to Richard Jordan of Boise, Idaho, USA. Rose set the pace for the evening as the next 25 lots averaged well over $40,000, contributing to the final average of $27,734 and surpassing the 2007 average of $25,667.31.

Highlights of the evening include:

  • Lot 3: KHW Regiment Ariel-Red (VG-89-4YR-CAN Regiment full sister to the Million Dollar Apple) selling for $85,000 to Peter Vail & Adam Liddle of Argyle, NY, USA. Consigned by Phoenix, Hanover Hill Holsteins and Richard Green, Ariel's September 2008 Goldwyn daughter (Lot 4) sold next for $35,000 to Mike & Sheryl Deaver of Edgerton, WI, USA.
  • Lot 15: Blondin Goldwyn Beauty (June 2008 Goldwyn x VG-89-2YR-CAN Blondin Lyster Beauty) selling for $75,000 to Frank Phillipson of the UK. Goldwyn Beauty was consigned by Ferme Blondin of St-Placid, Quebec.
  • Lot 8: Valleyville Dolman Missy (April 2008 Dolman x VG-89-2YR-CAN Eastside Lewisdale Gold Missy) selling for $70,000 to Gert Andreasen of Denmark with owners Morsan Farms of Pononka, Alberta retaining a partial interest.
  • Lot 25: Braedale Altabaxter Metric (March 2008 Baxter x VG-85-2YR-CAN Braedale Anneka) selling for $60,000 to the partnership of Greaveston Genetics, Crovalley Holsteins & Ari Ekstein of Georgetown, Hastings and Woodbridge, Ontario.

Embryo Edition of Sale of Stars

Bidding continued the next day following the naming of Thrulane James Rose as Grand Champion of the Holstein Show. The anticipation grew and the crowd gathered as auctioneer Brent Walker of Guelph, Ontario called for additional bids, closing each lot one by one. When the final lot fell the average reached a new high for this sale series of $3,026.92 per embryo.

Highlights of the Embryo Sale:

  • Lot #1AS for $5200/embryo: 4 Mutually Agreeable Sire embryos x Comestar Goldwyn Lilac VG-88-2YR-CAN to Comestar Holsteins of Victoriaville, Quebec. These embryos were consigned by Mapel Wood, O'Connor & Genervations, all of Ontario.
  • Lot #1S for $5100/embryo: 4 Mutually Agreeable Sire embryos x Lylehaven Lila Z VG-89-2YR-CAN to Diamond Genetics & Nici Nosbisch of Holland. The consignors were Cormdale, Comestar, Falshaw, Whittier, Genervations & ADI.
  • Lot #5S for $5000/embryo: 5 Planet embryos x Misty Springs Shottle Silk VG-88-2YR-CAN to Velthuis & Chartroise Holsteins of Osgood, Ontario. Consigned by Dyment and Ardross.

2008 Component Sale of Stars

The Semex Alliance was proud to once again manage the 2008 Sale of Stars, Component Breed Edition headed by Sale Manager Gary Bowers, along with representatives from each Canadian breed association including, Yves Charpentier & Linda Ness from the Canadian Ayrshire Association, Jessie Weir from the Canadian Brown Swiss Braunvieh Association, Mario Seguin from CIAQ and Russell Gammon and his staff from Jersey Canada.

Featuring the finest Jersey, Ayrshire and Brown Swiss genetics, the 2008 Component Breed Sale of Stars was held immediately following the conclusion of the two Holstein heifer classes in the Ring of Excellence.

Highlights Include:

Jersey Sale:

  • Average: $8,616.67 on 18 lots
  • High Seller: Lot 8C: 1st choice Connection x Vandenberg Amedeo Gorgeous EX-97-2E & Supreme Champion Royal 2008 selling for $52,000 to L-L-T Investments of Carmel, CA, USA. The choice was consigned by Rapid-Bay.
  • 2nd High Seller: Lot 19C: Bridon Jades Acquire the 5th placed Milking Yearling at World Dairy Expo 2008 by Jade selling for $12,700 to Jacob & Anna Vander Meulen of Trenton, Ontario. Acquire was consigned by Bridon Jerseys of Paris, Ontario.

Ayrshire Sale:

  • Average: $5,050 on 4 lots
  • High Seller: Lot 3C: Mapleburn Loreal's Laura (May 2008 Modem x Mapleburn Loreal VG-89-4YR-CAN) selling for $6,200 to Ferme St-Clement & Ferme Laitiere Mercier of Beaubarnois, Quebec.

Brown Swiss Sale:

  • Average: $5,150 on 2 lots
  • High Seller: Lot 6C: Gubelman Collection Emily (Sept. 2007 Collection full sister to 2004 Nom. All-American Sr 2 Yr Old Gubelman Collection Emma) selling for $5,300 to Bradner Farms of Abbotsford, British Columbia. Consignor were the Gubelmans of Walton, Ontario.
